ost Reverend Richard Smith


was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 28, 1959. He studied at St. Mary's University and at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax.  Ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1987, he pursued further studies in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and earned a Licence in  1993 and a Doctorate in 1998.   After some fruitful years of ministry in the Archdiocese of Halifax, he was appointed  Bishop of Pembroke on April 27, 2002 and  ordained to the episcopate on June 18, 2002.    Pope Benedict XVI , on March 22, 2007, appointed him to the Metropolitain See of Edmonton.  Archbishop Richard Smith was formally installed as eighth Archbishop of Edmonton on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

The Chancellor, is responsible, as Moderator of the Curia, for overseeing the work of the Catholic Pastoral Centre, and acts in the name of the Archbishop by way of delegation. Our Archives, which form the memory of the Archdiocese, and which make possible an understanding of the history of evangelization in our area, are the responsibility of the Archivist who also is in charge of records management.

The Finance Office

The Archdiocese exercises stewardship as trustee of the material offerings presented by the people for the advancement of the Gospel. The Finance Committee, made up of lay people with great expertise in financial matters, oversees this aspect of the work of the Archdiocese. The Financial Administrator, the Assistant Financial Administrator and their assistant care for the financial affairs of the people of the Archdiocese. Our Human Resources Coordinator deals with issues related to employment.

Pastoral Services Office

The Director of Pastoral Services coordinates the actions of all of the pastoral offices, and supervises them, so that the needs of each are met, and so that they all work together to foster the common good. Under his direction, two full-time and one part-time administrative assistants serve the needs of the pastoral offices.
